The Biggest Feature Is Its Awesomeness: The iPhone 12 Pro Max

It’s too big!

Its display refresh rate is still only 60hz!

Its screen’s scratch resistance hasn’t improved!

These are the three loudest complaints that have continued to circulate in almost every review I’ve read or seen since the iPhone 12 Pro Max was released. I’ve had this iPhone for two weeks now and from what I observe so far is that these complaints are totally nonsensical.

If you’ve been considering the newest iPhone but have been hesitant based on any of these three negative points, then perhaps a bit more insight will help to make a more balanced decision.

It’s too big!” …No, it’s not.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max (squared edges) is only marginally taller than previous Max sized iPhones. Observe how the rounded edges of an iPhone XS Max only make it appear smaller.

In fact, it’s virtually the same size and thickness as last year’s iPhone 11 Pro Max. If you’re upgrading from any Plus or Max size iPhone, you will quickly dismiss its minuscule size differences within the first few minutes. The only thing you’ll continue to notice is how much the polished flat edges give the phone a better grip and marvel at how Apple managed to stretch the screen out even further to the edge.

Its display refresh rate is still only 60hz!” …Yes, because this saves battery life.

The screen is brighter and its bezel is razor thin. Images and videos seemingly envelope the entire surface.

Yes – it doesn’t have the increased 120hz refresh rate that gamers and super tech savvy people were hoping for this year. The new iPhone now features 5G connectivity which is known to be a battery hog. For this reason, engineering compromises had to be made and Apple prioritized connectivity over screen refresh rate. Besides, at 60hz… oh geez, no one cares. The screen abundantly delivers in all the areas the rest of us care about – it’s brighter, snappy, the clarity and color is phenomenal and more importantly, thanks to the unnoticeably lower frame rate, the battery can last all day.

Its screen’s scratch resistance hasn’t improved.” …Yes, but the shatter resistance is now four times greater.

The screen now has nano-ceramic crystals integrated into the structure of its display glass using a high-temperature crystallization manufacturing process making it stronger than most metals.

Yes – the scratch resistance of the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the same as last year’s iPhone. However, as memory serves, it was already pretty good. This iPhone continues to resist scuffs from objects up to a level 6 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Now with Apple’s “Ceramic Shield” introduced to the glass, it now has four times the shatter resistance of previous iPhones.

On the back, the new iPhone has the same strengthened Dual ion-exchange glass from iPhone 11 Pro that now sits beautifully flush with the stainless steel bezel.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max is an exceptional device. On its exterior, Apple has combined the best and most beautiful design elements of past generations while within its interior, it now houses advancements that stand worlds apart from all its predecessors. Powered by Apple’s own A14 Bionic, the first 5-nanometer chip in the industry, it has a faster and more efficient CPU and GPU chip than any other current smartphone.

How superb the iPhone fit and finish is cannot be understated. The front and back glass are both completely level with its stainless steel frame making it now seem like one solid slab of glass. It feels thinner, more dense in weight, and premium in quality.

I feel for the first time the iPhone is now truly the whole computer rather than just an extension of one. Its premium design, speed, expanded screen size, improved low light camera performance, and incredible all-day battery life make this iPhone the most capable mobile device I’ve ever owned.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max starts at $1099 and is available at apple.com.
