While many amazing new features have been introduced with the latest iOS 14 update for iPhone, I think the most noteworthy thing that came along with the update is the firmware upgrade which adds to the AirPods Pro the feature of “Spatial Audio” that the new iOS 14 supports.
The AirPods Pro were already incredible with Noise Cancellation and its even more impressive “Transparency Mode” which utilizes the AirPods’ internal and external mics to pass sound through them as if they aren’t even in your ears. Now, with “Spatial Audio”, all the technology that has been crammed into these tiny earbuds is fully showcased.
The motion-detecting accelerometers within each earbud now dynamically track the wearer’s head movement to give theater-like surround-sound to what is being watched on screen. Even more brain-melting is how this head tracking also keeps the sound mapped to the device the video is coming from. As your head moves, the effect is like you’re not wearing headphones but you’re the only one in the room that can hear the sound and where it’s coming from – the experience is like pure magic.
If you already have a pair of AirPods Pro, Apple just added a huge feature to your existing headphones with this update. To get the new Spatial Audio feature, just update your iPhone to iOS 14. The AirPods Pro will then auto-update its firmware (to version 3A283). Once updated, you will find “Spatial Audio” added to its settings.
If you haven’t yet experienced AirPods Pro and have been considering getting them, they are a solid buy. Now, with Spatial Audio added, I consider them worth every penny.
AirPods Pro are $249 and available at Apple.com.
